Markus Stöcklin (D1033-SUI)

“THE IRONMAN IN THE DESERT”

You can be a triathlete, like swimming for several kilometres, and suddenly want to get away from it all for six days at the heart of an arid, hostile desert, far from any lake or sea. That’s the case for Swiss runner Markus Stöcklin. This 53-year old triathlete has participated in 17 Ironmans, including one in Hawaii, before deciding to sign up for his first SULTAN MARATHON DES SABLES. “I wanted to learn more about my limitations and above all see how far my feet would carry me.” The desert? It’s something he’s already experienced during various hikes in the United States and the Canaries, but he’d never really run before taking the start of the first leg of the Marathon des Sables on Sunday. “The first day in the dunes proved very testing. I didn’t expect it to be so difficult before I read the roadbook, but I’m thrilled to be here. I’ve really found what I was looking for in this event…” A bit of sharing, some beautiful landscapes and above all ‘a genuine face-to-face meeting with myself”.
