High technology to serve the Sultan Marathon des Sables.
This year, the Sultan Marathon des Sables is benefitting from two innovative high tech systems, one to establish runners’ classifications and the other for real-time monitoring.
A quasi-immediate classification.
The system, called “Posi”, managed by the company TD com, transmissions supplier for the Sultan Marathon des Sables, is simple. All runners are equipped with a very small transponder on their ankle, which records when they pass the control points and finish line thanks to a mat allowing for operational collection. The data is transmitted by satellites to the race PC, which allows for almost immediate competitor monitoring management at the CP and real-time establishment of their classification at the finish.
This classification, as in all sports competitions, is backed up with manual timing.
RaceTracker ®, a GPS system to monitor runners.
Around one hundred runners have decided to use this system, which will allow their friends and family, or sponsors, to follow their progress live. They are equipped with a small orange GPS box on the top of their bag, which transmits their positions by satellite, using an adapted signal to update their exact position on a Google Earth-type map. Updates are made every 10 minutes.
In addition to the runners who have chosen this paid-for service, the top ten in the general classification will be systematically equipped with this system to allow as many people as possible to follow developments at the head of the race.
For the first stage, the race management have nominated the 10 runners to be permanently ‘tracked’, based on their knowledge of the competitors and their sporting performances.
Direct monitoring of runners’ arrival.
A video camera will transmit a streamed image of the finishing line of each stage to the darbaroud.com website, by satellite, every five seconds, thus allowing everybody to follow the end of the stages live.
