« I didn’t think I would win »
Seconds after reaching the finish line of this 25th Sultan Marathon des Sables, the winner of the women’s race, Monica Aguilera (1 020 - Spain) shared her thoughts with us.
Darbaroud: For your first participation, you blew us all away. Did you come here thinking you would win this Sultan Marathon des Sables?
Monica Aguilera: Not at all. I came to have a look. To learn. I wasn’t thinking about a victory. But I’m not the only winner today. All the women who crossed that line today have won.
D: This year’s edition is barely over, but do intend to come back in 2011?
MA: First of all, I must recover from this one: it was exhausting. Many pulled out, it was a very difficult edition. I didn’t think it would be so tough.
D: You’re saying it is a tough race, yet you won it easily. You won nearly all stages. You were at the top every single day.
MA: It doesn’t mean I didn’t suffer like all the others. The heat, the jebels, the dunes, it was all designed so we would suffer – and we did. In any case, I am extremely proud of this victory.
Jennifer Salter (936, UK) : « I am delighted with my third position. I pushed myself on each stage and my victory on yesterday’s stage was a form of reward. It’s a very tough race. But it’s worth it. We run in exceptional conditions. »
