“The toughest of all Marathons des Sables”
Seconds after reaching the finish line of this 25th Sultan Marathon des Sables, its winner, Mohamad Ahansal (1 - Morocco) shared his thoughts with us.
Darbaroud: Mohamad, what do you make of this 25th edition, which you won very much ahead of your challengers?
Mohamad Ahansal: I’m extremely happy. It was important for me to win the anniversary edition. I’ve been training hard for the last six months. I’ve never trained so hard. Patrick had some nice surprises for us on the track.
D: You adopted a very « aggressive » strategy, starting off very fast every day. Was it to burn out your challengers?
M.A: Yes. This year, many competitors could hope to win: Wardian, El Aqra and the rest of the top ten. That’s why I adopted this strategy. I also wanted to have some flexibility for the long stage. You never know for sure you won’t get injured.
D: Years go by and you’re still triumphing on the Sultan Marathon des Sables. Until when do you think you’ll be seaking victory?
M.A: I give myself another two years to win the MDS, i.e. until 2012. Then it will be time to come just for the fun. Without pressure. For my own pleasure. There are many challengers ready to inherit the title.
