MDS HAD TO BE PART OF MY LIFE

Pavel Kirillov is a 33-year-old Russian. He will be taking part in the next MARATHON DES SABLES to test his limits. But he has some idea of where he’s going: the coach he’s chosen is the female winner of MDS 2015, his compatriot Natalia SEDYKH.

Pavel, can you tell us something about yourself?
My name is Pavel Kirillov, I’m Russian and I’m 33. I’m married and I have a wonderful daughter. I love travelling and sport.

How long have you been running?
I started running in 2013. It happened just like that, because my best friend ran too. He’s stopped since, but I carried on!

Were you into sport before that?
No! I had some bad habits, I liked to party…

How did you hear about MARATHON DES SABLES?
At about the time I started running, I saw a video of the marathon on the internet. At the time I couldn’t imagine wanting to take part in that kind of race. I thought those people were crazy! Who in their right mind would want to go and run in the desert, carrying their own equipment and food, and pay money for it?

So what made you take the plunge?
The idea took a long time to develop. I’ve run 14 marathons, and I finally realized that MDS had to be part of my life.

And so at last you signed up…
Yes, I think that it’s an opportunity to test your physical and mental strength. And also to meet interesting people. Oh, and I ran the Ice Baikal Marathon, one of the coldest races in the world. So now I need to run one of the hottest!

You’ve run 14 marathons, but have you ever participated in an ultra marathon?
This year, I took part in the Golden Ring Ultra Trail in Suzdal (Editor’s note: a couple of hundred km from Moscow). Quite honestly, I wasn’t ready to run 100 km; I was aiming at 50 km, but two weeks before the race, someone suggested I took part in the 100 km. It wasn’t too difficult, I just suffered from the heat a bit. I was pleased with my result: I was in the Top 20.

How are you doing with your MDS training?
Mentally, I think I’m ready. Physically, I still have some work to do. I run 6 times a week covering about 80 to 90 km.

Do you do any other sports?
Yes I do, I like to swim. In fact, after MDS, I might do a triathlon.

Are you planning to train alone or do you have a coach?
After I decided to take part in MDS, I immediately looked for a coach. I quickly opted for Natalya SEDYKH, who won MDS 2015. In my opinion, she is the perfect choice: she’s an experienced coach and has successfully competed in MDS twice (2nd in 2015 and 1st in 2016).

What are your strengths and weaknesses?
My strong points include my capacity to see my goals through, to think positively in difficult situations, and to focus on solutions to problems rather than causes. As to my weak points, I’d say that I’m not good at losing and that I tend to fight to the end, even if I’m heading for disaster.

Will you be running MDS alone or with someone else?
I initially signed up on my own. Since then I’ve been joined by a big team from Russia.

I’d like to rank in the Top 100.
